The Sacral Chakra is our pleasure center. This is our most intimate and private space. It is the seat of our creative energy be it sexual, reproductive, conscious or spontaneous. It also deals with nurturance – our ability to nurture and to be nurtured. This caretaking began in the womb, and thus problems with the sacral chakra is often linked to the time we spent being nurtured and carried by our mothers inside of her womb and our birthing experience. An imbalance in sex hormones diminishes our creative potency.
Sacral energy is sexual and procreative energy. Within the darkness of this creative space, we can produce children to carry on our genetic legacy or give life to ideas and projects that leave a lasting imprint on society.
The sacral chakra is located below the navel, and is linked to the ovaries for women and tests for men – which control the release of reproductive hormones. While these glands house our physical fertility; the sacral chakra houses our metaphysical fertility.
The Sacral chakra connects to the water element. It is where we find our juiciness, be it the juiciness of intimacy, a woman’s monthly cycle, the amniotic fluid that sustains life before childbirth or the big ideas that excite and turn you on at the thought of them. There is an ebb and flow to all of these experiences that is cyclical like the phases of the Moon.
The Sanskrit word for Sacral is Svadhisthana (svah-disch-tah-nah). It means “within one’s own place.” And, the word, sacral is derived from sacred. It speaks to the sweet, sacred ,divine and powerful quality of our sexuality. Sacral chakra imbalances are brought on by a fear around intimacy and the physical body, connecting with and sharing one’s feelings and vulnerability.

Astrology
The Moon governs the sacral chakra. The Moon represents the divine Mother and is concerned with honoring cycles, nurturance, caretaking, protection, creativity and flow. Too much lunar energy makes one erratic, manipulative, reactionary and guarded. Too little lunar energy makes one overly logical and linear, detached, insensitive and numb.
