Some rules are made to be broken. That is especially true when it comes to today’s leadership advice and the conventional profile of what makes a good leader. I have long felt that there needed to be a shift in our collective perspective because, right now, it is far too narrow and homogenized.
In this episode of The Design of a Leader Podcast, I’m taking off the gloves and going in on the most held and espoused beliefs around leadership. We often hear these things repeated by many of the most influential voices; and for them, these beliefs may hold true. However, there is a large constituency of leaders for whom these beliefs do not apply. Most leaders and entrepreneurs will spend years, if not decades, trying to conform to these “standards,” struggle to keep up and then beat themselves up time and time again for “falling short.”
And that’s because many people will trust the beliefs and guidance of those at the “top” more than we trust our own inner knowing. Most people crave the validation that comes with fitting in and checking the boxes. I am not most people. And by the end of this episode, my hope is that you will either realize or feel vindicated in knowing that you are not either.
