We all know the big three leadership commitments – vision, strategy and people (which includes your team and your customers); but what about #1? Yeah, I’m talking about You. Have you ever thought about how the commitments you’ve made (or haven’t made) to yourself and that may be holding you back from reaching your goals, growing your business or curating the life you want?

We are preparing for a transition out of a tribal cycle and ushering in a period where we will be navigating themes that are more individual in nature.
I love using the analogy “strong link, unbreakable chain” because it succinctly underscores the need for each of us to fortify our role and position in the collective “chain” in society. And it creates a vivid picture of the detriment we find ourselves in when we neglect or deprioritize our “link”, while committing to helping others strengthen theirs.
It’s a proposition that is unsustainable and lacking in integrity. Because we can’t be for others what we have not first become for ourselves – at least not authentically.

In this episode of The Design of a Leader Podcast, I wanted to take some time to ruminate on some ways that we can strengthen our individual links so that we become the strong point in society’s collective chain. As leaders, this is an imperative. The time for hiding behind “service to others” while “rejecting the self” is over. We are being called to a higher timeline where talking it will no longer cut it. We have to walk it. That means we have to hold our call to leadership sacred, make commitment to ourselves and keep them.
In this episode, we talk about:
- A reflection on how we can apply toltec wisdom to grow as leaders and entrepreneurs (Reference: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz)
- Why you should strive to “do your best” in business and why that may not look the way you think it should
- The four sacred commitments that every leader must make to themselves
- How to become aware of and accept who you are as a leader and how you are designed to lead
- The importance of self-accountability, how it differs from being held accountable and how to develop or strengthen this habit
- The different types of decision-making authority, how to identify yours and understand the role it plays in growing and sustaining your business
